Dane grew up in Waikiki and learned to surf there. He started competing when he was 14. At 16 years old Dane became the State champion for his division - the Jr Men's. At 17, Dane went to South Africa and became the world AM champion. He won his first pro event at the age 18 in Japan. It was called the Niijima Pro on the Island of Niijima. Dane went on to win more events in California, New Jersey, and Florida. His biggest wins were the Gunston 500 in South Africa, the Pipeline Masters, World Cup of Surfing, the Smirnoff pro and the Duke Kahanamoku championship which was held on the North Shore of Oahu. In 1983, he held the world title and eventually lost it due to regulations between organizations.
Dane moved on from competing and started a new avenue in helping companies market their products by doing exotic surf trips and doing movies and photo programs for ads. This opened up a whole new way for other surfers to make a living instead of competing on the world tour.
Today there is the competitive surfer and the marketing surfer. Dane's next adventure began as he worked his way into the retail end of the surfing world and opened up the first woman's surf boutique - ROXY - which again open up another avenue for the industry to grow, this time with women joining their husbands or boyfriends in the water and riding waves. Now the industry is for the family and not just for the beach boy of the old days.
"What an opportunity that God has provided for all of us. Now I get a chance to share up close and personal the gift that God has given me." Aloha, Dane.

SURFER Magazine Celebrates the 50 Greatest Surfers of All Time. Article on Dane Kealoha "...Dane surfed Backdoor as well as anyone does today, and on a twin-fin. I want to see any of these guys today go out there on a twin-fin and surf Backdoor as well as Dane did. I have a deeper love for that wave just from watching him." - Sunny Garcia
For many of the teenagers in red shirts surfing at Ala Moana Bowls yesterday, it was their first time out, but they caught several 1- to 2-foot waves, some riding the ridge of water until it flattened out. It was the first surf session by Surf 2 Serve, a new project that uses surfing to improve the lives of disadvantaged youth , especially those who live or have lived at the Next Step homeless shelter in Kakaako.More...

For Kealoha, it's all about "the love" for people. More...
