Kim H. - Fremont, California I visited Hawaii for a personal vacation and I thought, while i'm in Hawaii, why not surf? I booked a 2 hour lesson with Dane. Although it was a group lesson price, I was the only student for that time! Since his place is only a year old and relatively new, not many tour groups book with him and little people know about it. As a result, you won't get a class that is 20 people large!
Dane is definitely qualified to teach. I was able to stand up several times on the surfboard within the first hour! It was a great lesson. I strongly recommend conditioning yourself with some push-ups and swimming exercises if possible to work the upper body to better the experience. I was super exhausted by the end of the lesson. Also recommend taking the morning class since less people will be in the water fighting with you for the waves.
After the lesson, they provide water and towels so you don't need to bring any of those. just wear a swimsuit (and short shorts if you don't like your bikini) (for the ladies). They store the stuff for you in the back, so you don't have to worry about it.
Great personal attention. I definitely would want to surf again after this lesson! ----- H.Z. - St. Louis, MO When I first spoke with Dane over the phone, he spent a generous amount of time talking with me about my experience and challenges and identified my approximate skill level and even addressed my encountered challenges.
For our lesson, Dane brought for me a great board that was intended for a slightly more advanced surfer, which I loved. And after checking on what I already know and what I can do, he quickly reviewed the basics and paddled out with me to the spot. He taught me to be aware of all the natural elements around me, how to spot a wave. He made very helpful corrections to my form and balancing, gave great tips, and , and taught me to let the spirit and intuition take over for the right decision...
The greatest part is that, he told me that knowing my abilities, after one more lesson, I shouldn't have to pay to surf anymore. Dane is a great surfer and instructor with a big heart, and I look forward to my next lesson with him! ----- Mike Y. - San Francisco, CA Couldn't recommend Dane highly enough to teach your kid how to surf.
I took my six year old boy for his first surf lesson, and was extremely impressed with Dane's ability to connect with kids. Dane is extremely patience and has a great knack for teaching.
We did an hour lesson with Father and son, but really I was out there to encourage the boy... There were four people total in my class, a teenage brother & sister, and us... PLUS Dane, a photographer/cheerleader, and Aunt Jennie who was watching out for the boy. The boy was able to stand up and ride every wave!
Locals and tourists... Start out right from the beginning and take a few lessons from Dane! It'll go a long way towards your surfing career! ----- Ellen C. - Boston, Massachusetts Two words - AWESOME!
I had emailed Dane a couple weeks before I was going to Hawaii but did not know how my plans were going to play out. However, the day before I left, I realized I could take a 7 AM lesson and I proceeded to reach out to Dane to see if he could teach me. Though it was last minute, Dane went out of his way to pick me up from my hotel and take me on a private lesson.
It was the best experience I've ever had! I had taken a class at Hawaiian Fire last year, though it was fun, it does not beat Dane. Dane pointed out what I was not doing correctly and helped me improve.
I would highly recommend Dane over any other Surf School. Dane is one of the greatest surfers and who would be a better teacher than a Pro?
Next time I go to Hawaii, I would definitely take week long classes with Dane!
